- Move. I checked house prices and rent for areas within one hour's drive of D.C. and found three-bedroom homes in older areas for less than $100,000.00. It would be worth it for couples who are struggling right now financially to move and save hundreds of thousands of dollars on a home which would lower their mortgage by about 60-70% and give them some room to breathe.
- Start a home business while keeping your present job. Open an eBay store and peruse the garage sales and flea markets in your area for stuff to sell. Don't ever assume there won't be a market for what you find. Open a consultancy, offer advice to people in your field.
- Share. Find others who have similar needs to you and share. Share rides to cut down on gas and wear and tear on cars. Share shopping trips to buy in bulk and split the items between you. Share babysitting so you don't have to pay a babysitter.
- Cut back on your consumer spending. Do you really need to have the latest gadget when it comes out? Does it really make that much difference to your life? The answer is no.
- Eat out less, rent a DVD from Redbox, go to museums, art galleries, and go for walks.
- Create your own enjoyment.

How to survive the faltering economy
I live in Northern Virginia where house prices and rent are still at ridiculously high levels. It is like this area is immune to what the rest of the economy is suffering. About fifteen minute from where I live they are opening up a new condo area and the prices start at $299,000 for a one-bedroom and it will probably fill up. Looking at this scenario made me think. How are people who can't afford to live here going to manage it if their job is in this area? Here are my solutions.
